Description

Helen Bur’s Women for Life revisits the 1981 Greenham Common Women’s Peace Camp, a pivotal moment in feminist and anti-nuclear activism. Inspired by Mike Goldwater’s iconic photo, the painting draws from archival imagery to depict the women who marched 100 miles from Cardiff to the US airbase, carrying banners reading “Women for Life on Earth.”

Their peaceful protest aimed to halt nuclear escalation and promote East-West cooperation. Dressed in bright scarves and jackets, the women sit in defiance, halting a bus en route to the military base.

Bur’s focus remains on the women—grounded, determined, and unshaken—set against a muted military backdrop, transforming concrete into a site of resistance.

Their message endures each May 24th, Women’s International Day for Disarmament and Peace:
We remember. We resist. We rise.
