Description
In 2007, the renowned artist Invader installed the striking Union Jack mosaic as part of his London invasion under the Gray’s Inn Road street sign in the London Borough of Camden. The mosaic, representing the United Kingdom’s national flag, with its Red, White and Blue colours with the addition of a central Space Invader, became an instant sensation among art lovers and locals. However, the joy was short-lived as the mosaic was stolen the following summer in 2008, leaving behind a void that was deeply felt by the community. After seven long years, the Union Jack mosaic finally reappeared in 2015, much to the excitement and delight of everyone. Its return brought back the Invader charm to the borough and once again became a symbol of pride for the neighbourhood.
Location of the Union Jack Mosaic: At the intersection of Gray’s Inn Road and St Chads Pl, right next to the Travelodge, London Central Kings Cross, Willings House, 356-364 Gray’s Inn Road, Kings Cross, WC1X 8BH, you can spot the Union Jack mosaic situated just under the Gray’s Inn Road street sign.
Union Space was never released to the public as an edition in 2008 and instead featured as the screen-printed front and back cover of the UK invasion guide book. This invasion guide book very rarely shows up for sale.
Union Space has been referenced as a print edition in Invader’s catalogue raisonné where it shows as only a signed trial proof edition of 6. All of the signed edition trial proofs are believed to have been kept by the Artist.
The unsigned trial proofs we have for sale are part of the very early trials and printmaking and were acquired in 2017 when Pictures on Walls shut its doors. Don’t expect perfection, these are trial proofs after all! From a small finger smudge in the printing to a small coffee stain in the print margin, it’s all part of the charm.
