This piece recalls a mural the artist painted a decade ago in Queens, New York, for the Top to Bottom project organised by Arts Org.

In both works, the themes are interconnected, hands, threads, a needle, and the rhythm of movement. Yet this time, we observe the very act of threading: one pair of hands grappling to get the thread through the needle’s eye, while another pair, just above, has successfully accomplished it. This juxtaposition captures a moment of struggle alongside one of quiet success, showcasing the duality of the human experience.

As Case himself reflects: “Some symbolic movements will always stay with me. I like the quiet acts of patience and precision. Enduring frustration and yet not losing persistence are feelings that have accompanied me throughout the entire year.”

While threading a needle may seem straightforward, Case transforms this simple act into a metaphor for life and situations. There are goals and points of focus, and on some days, everything aligns and the thread glides through effortlessly, and we move forward without resistance. Yet on other days, despite repeated effort, the thread refuses to cooperate. The harder we push, the more elusive the goal becomes.

In those moments, patience becomes both lesson and companion. It’s about recognising the frustration, stepping back, taking a breath, and allowing the natural rhythm to return. It’s about focus not force. Persistence not pressure. And ultimately, it’s about trust: that even the smallest act, performed with repetition, care and calm, will find its way through.
