In AZ289, Add Fuel reimagines the Portuguese azulejo, the iconic tin-glazed ceramic tile work synonymous with Iberian art and architecture, through a distinctly contemporary lens. Executed in gel and ink on ceramic, the work preserves the structural discipline and rhythmic symmetry of traditional azulejos while infusing them with the artist’s modern visual language of layered pattern, concealment, and play.

Here, the familiar blue-and-white palette gives way to a more experimental surface treatment, where fluid lines and gestural ink work evoke the spontaneity of street art while maintaining the restraint of classical design. This subtle tension between heritage and reinvention defines Add Fuel’s practice: the dialogue between what is inherited and what is reinterpreted.

AZ289 stands as a refined synthesis of urban expression and cultural memory, a meditation on Portugal’s visual history recast through the sensibility of a contemporary artist who bridges tradition and modernity with wit and precision.
