About Nebula Rose

Nebula Rose begins with a rose grown in Sophie Mess’s Devon garden, named for the way its colours recall the Rosette Nebula, a distant region where stars are formed.

From this point of origin, the work expands. What is observed in nature becomes something more atmospheric, where colour carries the composition beyond the botanical and into a wider sense of scale. Deep crimson and magenta petals unfold into a luminous centre, held against a rich teal ground that suggests depth beyond the immediate.

The composition also draws from the original large-scale mural painted in Oskarshamn, Sweden, where the rose unfolds within overlapping circular fields. This sense of roundness is carried into the special edition, informing the gold leaf variant, where a halo form echoes the work’s celestial reference.

Here, Nebula Rose opens into something far more expansive, echoing the vastness of the universe and the sense of possibility it holds. It becomes a quiet reminder of our connection to something greater, where the intimate and the infinite exist in the same moment.

“Inspired by the Rosette Nebula, I love the idea of a place where stars are born, where the garden and the cosmos come together to create something new.”

About Sophie Mess

Sophie Mess is one of the UK’s most distinctive voices in contemporary botanical street art, working across large-scale murals and studio-based painting. Beginning her career with Graffiti Life in East London, she contributed to the visual landscape of Brick Lane before expanding her practice internationally.

Her work has appeared across Europe and North America, including Wynwood Walls in Miami. Recent projects include a nine-metre-high mural at London’s Saatchi Gallery for the FLOWERS exhibition, a multi-site shopfront installation for Chelsea in Bloom in central London, and a new mural in Reims, in the Champagne region of France.

Recognised for her large-scale floral compositions, Mess creates moments of stillness within urban environments, introducing a sense of calm, clarity, and visual pause. Now based in Devon, her studio and edition work bring the scale and presence of her murals into more intimate settings.
