Sonny Sundancer: Exploring Moody Greys and Textured Surfaces in ‘Concrete & Colour’, GraffitiStreet Gallery

Renowned for his powerful wildlife murals that celebrate the beauty and urgency of endangered species, Sonny Sundancer takes an exciting leap into the world of abstraction with his latest works for Concrete & Colour. Moving beyond his signature animal depictions, Sonny Sundancer explores the emotional depth and energy found within abstract forms, marking a bold evolution in his artistic journey.

While this isn’t the first time Sonny Sundancer has ventured into abstraction, his new works present an exciting progression. The canvases now feature richer textures and darker, moodier colours, offering a deeper, more nuanced take on his evolving style. These new pieces maintain his signature emotional depth while providing a fresh approach to abstraction.

Dusk Walker

Suspended between light and reflection, a cheetah glides into a place where the real and imagined collide. The interplay of oil and acrylic on aluminium creates a luminous, ever-changing surface that shifts with the viewer’s perspective. The cheetah, caught in mid-motion, seems to exist in a dreamlike realm, where time and space dissolve into abstraction. The dark warmer tones and cool hues intertwine, echoing the dualities of nature, motion and stillness, light and shadow.

Dusk Walker invites the viewer into a fleeting moment, where the boundaries between the natural world and the imagined are blurred, offering an exploration of the ephemeral beauty of the wild.

Smouldering Light

Smouldering Light is set against a fractured, textured backdrop where a cheetah emerges like a memory, an ephemeral figure drifting through a dreamlike terrain that bridges the urban and the wild. Embracing abstraction and expressive texture, the canvas mimics the gritty feel of concrete, layered with smoky greys and dynamic, nuanced hues. This bold interplay of shadow and light brings movement and depth, drawing the viewer into an atmospheric world where emotion and instinct converge. The rough surface which includes volcanic ash offers a tactile experience, encouraging a deeper, sensory engagement.

Through this work, Sonny explores the wildlife representation and their erasing habitats, using abstraction to reveal the emotional undercurrents beneath the image, and inviting viewers into a space where raw nature meets urban expression.

Ishema – Pride and Strength

Ishema meaning “pride” in Kinyarwanda is a powerful portrait that embodies strength, dignity, and ancestral presence. In this large-scale work, Sonny fuses the precision of charcoal realism with his signature graffiti-inspired aesthetic. The gorilla’s penetrating gaze commands attention, while vibrant, expressive strokes of colour ripple across its shoulders, echoing the energy of street art. This visual tension between control and spontaneity mirrors the artist’s exploration of nature’s place within an increasingly urbanised world. Rich in symbolism and emotion, Ishema challenges traditional wildlife portraiture by bridging cultural and visual languages.

Through this fusion, Sonny not only honours the spirit of the gorilla, but also elevates it as a timeless symbol of resilience, identity, and the wild’s enduring voice.
