Banksy’s Royal Courts Mural Silenced Behind Steel and Concrete

Only what feels like minutes after it appeared, Banksy’s mural outside the Royal Courts of Justice has been shut away from public view. What began as a raw critique of power, a judge’s gavel raised like a weapon over a fallen protester, has now been physically silenced with the very tools of authority: a black covering, then a metal barricade with heavy concrete footings.

The speed and severity of the cover-up tell their own story; it was art that struck a nerve. Banksy’s mural exposed the criminalisation of Palestine Action protesters and the weaponisation of law against peaceful protest. By hiding it so quickly, officials confirmed its message: dissent is not only punished but erased.

Photos of guards standing watch, and the now-covered up wall, have gone viral proof that you can try to block an image, but you can’t contain its meaning. For many, the cover-up has become part of the artwork itself: a living performance of censorship.

What happens next remains uncertain. Members of the public have called for the mural to be preserved and expressed anger that it has been hidden from view, preventing photographs and access. At the same time, rumours suggest the work will be jet-washed from the building. As the surface is stone, any removal would likely be carried out by specialists to ensure the paint is stripped in a controlled and professional manner.

What is certain is that, even if removed, the mural will be remembered as one of Banksy’s most powerful responses created in direct response to the mass arrests over the weekend of Palestine Action protesters in London.

Banksy’s work continues to challenge power, provoke debate, and leave lasting marks, even when covered up. For those who want to explore more of his practice, you can discover Banksy artworks in our online store here.
