Birds of No Nation: Shamsia Hassani’s Mural in Downtown Houston
Shamsia Hassani’s Birds of No Nation mural in Houston, Texas, reflects on migration, displacement, and humanity on the move. Created by Afghanistan’s first female graffiti artist, the mural forms part of the #BigArtBiggerChange outdoor museum, curated and produced by Street Art for Mankind (SAM) in downtown Houston.
Known for her monumental female figures, Hassani often explores themes of identity, resilience, and the experiences of people affected by conflict. In Birds of No Nation, the artist turns her attention to migration and the shared human stories behind global movement.
The Meaning Behind Shamsia Hassani’s Birds of No Nation Mural
The mural speaks to a world where movement across borders has become a defining reality for millions of people. According to the United Nations, an estimated 281 million people, around 3.6% of the global population, live outside their country of origin today, compared with 2.8% in 2000 and 2.3% in 1980.
Many of these migrations are not voluntary. Families and individuals often leave their homes to escape war, persecution, large-scale human rights violations, or natural disasters. Hassani’s mural captures the emotional complexity of this experience through symbolism and atmosphere.

A Call for Compassion
Through Birds of No Nation, Hassani invites viewers to reflect on empathy and shared humanity. The mural encourages compassion toward those forced to leave their homes while also reminding us that migration is a deeply human story that transcends borders.
The artwork also aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly:
- Goal 10.7 – facilitating safe and responsible migration
- Goal 16 – promoting peaceful and inclusive societies
By situating the mural within a public urban space, Hassani transforms an everyday wall into a platform for dialogue about displacement, peace, and global responsibility.

The Shamsia Hassani Birds of No Nation mural invites viewers to reflect on migration and the shared human experience of displacement.
Shamsia Hassani’s Global Voice
Since leaving Afghanistan following the fall of Kabul in 2021, Hassani has continued to create murals internationally. While she now lives in Los Angeles, her work remains closely connected to themes of displacement and identity, experiences she understands personally as an artist who has lived through migration and exile.
In Birds of No Nation, Shamsia Hassani reflects on Afghan girls and freedoms, carrying the weight of captivity, like birds who have lost their voice for singing. Across cities around the world, Shamsia Hassani’s murals give visual form to stories that might otherwise remain unheard.
