Add Fuel announces his first Book Launch “□1” (Square One), March 2018

Diogo Machado (aka Add Fuel) has announced the launch of  his first ever book “□1” (Square One) and we’re super excited! For one night only Diogo opens up his artist studio in the beautiful coastal city of Cascais, Portugal to invite you all for drinks and an evening of interaction, so you can discover or rediscover his work in his artistic environment.

Add Fuel is Portuguese visual artist and illustrator Diogo Machado (b. 1980). A former graphic designer, his recent artistic practice has been focused on reinterpreting and playing with the language of traditional tile design, and that of the Portuguese tin-glazed ceramic azulejo in particular. Blending traditional and contemporary elements, his original vector-based designs and stencil-based street art reveal an impressive complexity and a masterful attention to detail.

The self-published book presents a comprehensive approach to all of his work which is greatly characterised by rethinking and reworking the aesthetics of Portuguese tile work, in a contemporary format.

The introductory text is written by art writer and curator Sasha Bogojev, and also includes an in-depth reflection by the art historian Alexandre Pais, from the National Tile Museum, where you can also see Add Fuels artwork on show. The book also features art direction by Nuno Salvaterra, graphic design by Valdemar Lamego, and the unique “Add Fuel” typeface created by João Miranda. (Check out ‘Add Fuel’ typeface on Diogo’s new website here).

The book is widely illustrated throughout its 240 pages with colour photos of pieces reflecting a variety of techniques and media – from ceramic to cross stitch embroidery, among others, as well as public art pieces produced in countries like Portugal, Spain, the UK, Norway, France, Italy, Tunisia, United States and Australia.

The book further includes a catalogue with a selection of original patterns which the artist has created since 2008, constituting thus an overview of this unique art form in the urban environment that Diogo Machado has been developing.

The book is launched in a standard edition, 450 copies and an exclusive collector’s edition that comes with an artist edition of a ceramic tile limited to 50 copies.

The launch of “□1” will take place on 3 March, between 6pm and 9pm, at the artist’s studio located at Pestana Cidadela Cascais, Av. D. Carlos I, Cascais, Portugal, in parallel with the monthly openings at the other studios and galleries situated in the same space.

This is a great opportunity to meet Diogo and witness his artistic process, from idea to creation. Good luck to everyone going for the exclusive collector’s edition, we can’t see these being available for long!
