‘The ‘Last Traveller’ by NIMI as part of Nuart’s ‘Art City’ program, 2017

The Last Traveler by Bergen-based artist NIMI is the latest addition to Nuart’s ‘Art City’ program: a new initiative to produce work outside of Nuart’s annual flagship festival.

NIMI, who originates from South Africa, describes the piece as the story of a journeyman – or woman in this case – who bears the weight of the past on their shoulders. The mural depicts a female character heavily laden by elements of her culture and identity as well as elements of both the man-made and natural worlds – telling the story of her origins and her journey. Like many of those currently caught in the global migration crisis however, this traveler’s final destination is unknown.

NIMI is an architect and street artist who likes to experiment with a variety of techniques, mediums and creative processes in his finely detailed murals and paintings. Here, he has used a chiaroscuro effect to also incorporate and reflect the architectural elements of the four-storey car park that houses the work.

This new landmark for Stavanger was created with the assistance of local artist RH74 and street art enthusiast Thomas Bolme.

It can be found at Jorenholmsgata 16, 4013 Stavanger and is the ‘sister piece’ to NIMI’s mural Sofia and the Mountain, which was produced by Nuart in 2016 and can be found on Store Skippersgate 35, 4013 Stavanger and can be found here.
