Banksy’s “Dorothy… I don’t think ” was displayed at “Banksy versus Bristol Museum”. The exhibition ran for 11 weeks over a decade ago, from June 13th to August 31st 2009, and featured more than 100 works of art that explored the themes of rebellion, politics, and social justice.
The Wizard of Oz
Banksy’s “Dorothy… I don’t think” depicts the famous Dorothy, played by Judy Garland, and her dog Toto from the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. Banksy has added his own twist by painting Dorothy on rusty material instead of canvas with the slogan “I don’t think we’re on canvas anymore”: a pun on Dorothy’s iconic line “I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore”. The unusual medium is seen to fall from a gold ornate frame.
“I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore” has become synonymous with the experience of being in a situation beyond the boundaries of what is considered typical or comfortable. It implies being thrust into a state of unfamiliarity, where surroundings and circumstances are strange and potentially unsettling. It denotes a sense of being out of one’s element, placing oneself in an environment outside the norm… In contrast to the movie, we do not have the luxury of shutting our eyes, tapping our heels thrice, and reciting the phrase, “There’s no place like home”, to transport us back to our usual, comfortable surroundings instantly. As Banksy quotes, “ Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable.”
