At GraffitiStreet, we believe art should do more than adorn walls… it should provoke, challenge, and inspire change. That’s precisely what happens when you encounter Portuguese artist Bordalo II’s Panda in our latest group show, Concrete & Colour, in Chichester.
Bold and textured, Trash Animal – Panda transcends sculpture to become a powerful monument to transformation. From a distance, its familiar, inviting visage feels almost playful. But as you draw nearer, the surface fractures, revealing a deeper narrative of consumer excess, environmental loss, and fearless reinvention.

Bordalo II’s Panda as a Wake-Up Call

His Panda, crafted entirely from salvaged waste, belongs to the internationally renowned Big Trash Animals series, monumental animal portraits assembled from forgotten objects that carry emotional and ecological weight. On closer inspection, The Panda reveals its intricate components: a black rotary phone and red cable loops like a headset across its face; An old mobile phone sits tucked away with nostalgic toys such as Hello Kitty and a small devil nestle near its edge; stuffed safari animals, faded and worn, evoke neglect and decay. Once cherished and now abandoned, these fragments are repurposed into a powerful visual and environmental statement.

Pandas have long symbolised nature’s fragility and the urgent plight of endangered species. Bordalo II’s Panda extends this symbolism, reflecting not only the vulnerability of ecosystems but also acting as a mirror to our own consumption and disregard.
