Street Artist in the Spotlight – RoamCouch

Street artist in the spotlight: RoamCouch. Few contemporary street artists have expanded the emotional and technical vocabulary of stencil art quite like Ryo Ogawa, known internationally as RoamCouch. Born in Gifu, Japan in 1976, Ogawa’s practice bridges precision and poetry, transforming the stencil medium into something unexpectedly romantic, immersive, and richly cinematic.

Influenced early by Japanese manga and trained as a designer from the age of 18, RoamCouch developed a disciplined visual language long before committing fully to art. A serious illness became a defining turning point, leading him to reassess his life’s direction and dedicate himself to artistic practice. In 2011, adopting the name RoamCouch, he began his full transition into the studio and the street, working with a distinctive method that uses over fifty layers of hand-cut stencils to build depth, atmosphere, and painterly detail.

His works have been exhibited in Japan and internationally, including his celebrated 2014 New York solo exhibition, A Beautiful Life, which sold out in its entirety. Yet beyond the gallery setting, RoamCouch’s most resonant contributions are arguably his murals, created with a rare sensitivity to place, memory, and community.

A mural collection that captures RoamCouch’s global vision

We present street artist in the spotlight: RoamCouch, bringing together a powerful body of work that captures the full breadth of his vision. These murals are not simply public artworks, they are emotional landmarks: vivid, layered images that fuse contemporary street culture with the spirit of Ukiyo-e. In what he calls “Neo Ukiyo-e,”RoamCouch often integrates traditional Mino washi paper into his practice, honouring Japanese material heritage while speaking in a contemporary global voice.

Street artist in the spotlight: RoamCouch and the art of stencil

What distinguishes RoamCouch is not only his technical mastery, but the tenderness embedded in his imagery. His murals hold a cinematic stillness, inviting viewers to linger, read the surface, and feel the narrative atmosphere within each scene. Layer by layer, his practice slows down the pace of the street itself, turning walls into sites of reflection rather than interruption. In this way, RoamCouch reframes mural-making as both spectacle and intimacy.

This spotlight marks a moment to encounter RoamCouch’s mural universe in full: a world of tenderness, drama, and intricate beauty, made with the patience of a craftsman and the imagination of a storyteller.
