ADD FUEL New Tile installation titled CRADLE, Pennsylvania 2023

Portuguese visual artist Diogo Machado ADD FUEL has recently been to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and created his new tile artwork installation for the bustling city titled CRADLE.

ADD FUEL’s inspiration for the design was to celebrate the people, places, and events that have shaped Philadelphia into the vibrant and dynamic city it is today.

The tile artwork’s main colour palette is blue, red, and brown, which was highly inspired by the city’s own Mercer tiles. Henry Chapman Mercer (June 24, 1856 – March 9, 1930) was an American tile-maker and designer of three distinctive poured concrete structures: Fonthill, his home; the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works; and the Mercer Museum that are based in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. The familiar colour scheme evokes a sense of warmth and a feeling of home recognisable to the people in Philadelphia.

…‘CRADLE’ is a tribute to Philadelphia’s storied history as a city of many firsts. From the founding of the United States to the emergence of countless cultural and artistic movements, Philadelphia has always been a place of innovation, creativity, and growth as it captures this spirit of possibility and discovery, inviting viewers to explore the many dimensions of Philadelphia’s cultural identity through this intricately crafted tile panel.
