Banksy Shreds Painting in Sotheby’s Auction Stunt, London 2018

Banksy has played one of the most audacious stunts in art history, by arranging for one of his best-known works, Girl with balloon, to shred itself after the sold hammer goes down at Sotheby’s auction for just over £1million.

Banksy’s canvas was the final item on Fridays auction at Sotheby’s in London. As soon as the painting sold and the hammer came down the painting sounded an alarm and began to pass through a shredder installed into the gold frame.

Banksy posted an image on Instagram of the shredded work dangling from the bottom of the frame with the title “Going, going, gone … ”

On Saturday evening, Banksy posted a short video clip on his Instagram page with the quote”The urge to destroy is also a creative urge”- Picasso.

The video showed a shredder being fitted to the frame of the painting saying,  “A few years ago, I secretly built a shredder into a painting.”

The clip shows Banksy places a hard board over the back of the painting, before text appears on the screen saying: “In case it was ever put up for auction.”

“It appears we just got Banksy-ed,” Alex Branczik, Sotheby’s senior director and head of contemporary art in Europe.

The auction house declined to reveal the identity of the buyer, however it is worth more than double than it’s sold price!
