Banksy’s Gross Domestic Product™, a temporary homewares store in Croydon, London, offered a fascinating range of products designed by the elusive artist himself. Each item featured Banksy’s signature style, from Banksy mugs to welcoming doormats and tiger rugs. Interestingly, the store’s creation was sparked by a legal battle against Banksy initiated by a greeting card company trying to claim legal custody of the artist’s name.
Throughout the store, Banksy addressed critical social issues that plague our world today, including forced human migration, animal welfare, fast fashion’s impact on the environment, climate change, the rat race we live under, and constant surveillance. The store was open for a limited time as a window shopping experience, providing a glimpse into Banksy’s unique perspective on the world.
The innovative artist has diversified his business and now offers the convenience of online shopping and an array of products ranging from art pieces to homewares and even items that evoke a sense of disappointment – as he proudly proclaims. Grab your baskets, and let’s go shopping; it’s Banksy time …

Banksy™ Tagged Tee
Looking for a creative and unique way to fulfil his trademark requirement to sell clothing with Banksy’s name on them, Banksy offered a collection of tagged tees that were truly one-of-a-kind. Each shirt is created by hand, using a process that involves vandalising charity shop t-shirts with stainer ink, spray paint, or oil sticks. This results in a unique and eye-catching design that will make a statement. It’s important to note that each shirt is unique, so sizes may vary. Additionally, it’s important to take care when washing these shirts. Due to the nature of the materials used, there is a risk of staining other clothes if the shirt is washed with them.

Banksquiat pays homage to the late Jean-Michel Basquiat, a pioneer in the realm of post-graffiti art. The print, created by Banksy, is a thought-provoking commentary on the constant commercialisation of Basquiat’s legacy in modern times. Banksy accomplishes this by adding to the very thing he is questioning … by crassly adding to the relentless commodification of Basquiat in recent times! The signed print is crafted on two distinct types of paper, black and grey board, which adds to its allure and visual appeal.

Banksy’s latest attempt at printmaking involves using spray paint on processing film and transferring the stencil directly onto a silk screen. This technique eliminates the need for digital manipulation, resulting in a strikingly authentic representation of hand-made marks. It looks pretty impressive; what’s more, the prints come in a set of three framed, each one personally signed and numbered.

The ‘diabetes-riddled corpse of Tony the Tiger’ rug, which features the advertising cartoon mascot for Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes breakfast cereal, appears on its packaging and advertising. Banksy believes this rug will make a strong statement about the unhealthy nature of sugary cereals and their impact on children’s health. He points out that £7.8 million annually is spent on under 5’s teeth extractions in the UK.

Banksy™ Welcome Mat
The intricately crafted Banksy GDP ‘Welcome Mat’ is crafted by hand using the material from life vests abandoned on the shores of the Mediterranean. It’s important to note that these vests were never reliable buoyancy aids in the first place, as they were often cheap imitations sold by smugglers who did not actually float. Banksy collaborated with ‘Love Welcomes‘, an organisation dedicated to helping women in detainment camps in Greece, to produce these mats. The proceeds from the sales were used to support refugees in accessing essential services in the local community.
