Jeremy Deller’s Provocative Billboards Coincide with Human Rights Day, 10th December 2020

The BUILDHOLLYWOOD family of JACKJACK ARTS and DIABOLICAL has collaborated with Jeremy Deller, for their latest Your Space Or Mine project which gives artists and creatives a platform on the street.

The collaborative project coincides with Human Rights Day on 10th December with billboards throughout ten cities across the UK including London, Birmingham, Manchester, Brighton, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester and Sheffield, to carry a reminder that people are being denied their basic human rights around the world.

Human Rights Day is observed every year on 10 December, being the day the United Nations General Assembly adopted, in 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). The UDHR is a milestone document that proclaims the inalienable rights which everyone is entitled to as a human being – regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.

Jeremy Deller is a Turner Prize-winning artist whose work is a varied practice. He describes himself as a self-taught conceptual artist, taking on various roles as a curator, social entrepreneur and director of projects including films, processions, historical re-enactments and exhibitions, including the film ‘Everybody in the Place’ (an incomplete history of Britain 1986-92) and ‘Sacrilege’, a life-size inflatable Stonehenge.

For this collaboration, Jeremy Deller has created with Fraser Muggeridge studio a series of simple statements to highlight 10 locations where human rights violations persist.

The direct messaging of these posters puts a spotlight on the inconsistency between a pledged adherence to the universal declaration of human rights and what is actually happening across the world.

“Collaborating with artists and offering them our street space to highlight important issues is more crucial than ever. We are delighted to be collaborating with Jeremy and his series of artworks which provides a startling reminder of how basic human rights are still being denied in many parts of the world. We hope the project brings some solidarity and shared humanity to our streets across the nation.” Khaly Nguyen, Head of Marketing (The BUILDHOLLYWOOD family of JACK, JACK ARTS and DIABOLICAL)
