Yekaterinburg is now home to a new public art installation created for the Stenograffia Festival by Spektr, a team of street artists and supported by Tochka Bank.
Street artists from the Spektr team have created a public art installation unique in both form and content. The installation Proud Streetlight features a straightened-out streetlight standing tall among a dozen “bowing” ones in the city of Yekaterinburg, Russia.
The artists straightened out the metal structure in an act symbolizing human daring and resilience.
The work was created as part of the Stenograffia 2020 street art festival. The idea behind the piece can be seen on a plaque installed next to it.
“For as long as humanity has existed, there have been those who have dared to defy their contemporaries. To say ‘yes’ in the face of a million ‘nos.’ To argue that the Earth is round, and everyone on it is equal. And when humankind faces global challenges, they refuse to bow under the weight of those circumstances.”
The theme addressed by the installation is especially relevant this year, as 2020 has confronted everyone with a burden of challenges: the novel coronavirus, the accompanying economic crisis, and so on.
Like the rest of the world, Stenograffia is persevering despite the odds: it has been difficult to bring in Russian-based artists to the festival and impossible to invite artists from afar.
